Jeqo RPG: Help and Instructions for Mapmaker!

Want to contribute to the making of the Jeqo RPG? Great!

The best place to begin is the Mapmaker. Using this tool, you can build maps for the rpg without the need for programming knowledge! But there are some things that will be very helpful to know to make the maps more interesting and interactive, so let's take a look at those!

General Tips

There are many fields that need not be filled out for every area. For example, there are four lighting states for an area, but it might not be necessary to describe the area for each lighting state (either because it doesn't change, or because it has a fixed lighting state). To cancel things such as these descriptions or the enviroment prompt, choose " cancel". Note that there must be a value in the full lighting description if the area lighting is undefined!

The what and whos prompts cannot be aborted by choosing cancel! You must erase everything that is present (or put a space, but blank is recommended) and choose "ok" or press enter. To do this quickly, just press backspace at the prompt and push enter. This is important because these values are read as strings, so pushing escape or choosing the default undefined value will turn these into different sets rather than nothing.

The Enviro prompt lets you set properties of the area. For example, if the area is to be a place where buying and selling can occur, you should type "forsell" at this prompt. If the area is wet, type "wet". (note that this value is different from other types of water. See the Enviro section for more).

The options at the border prompt (for the directions) is cut off. You must enter something for every value here; an 'undefined' will be taken as an open space (which is fine in some cases, such as random airspace). If you have an undefined for the floor, and the area is below "sealevel" (z<0), then it will be taken as a bottomless pit. Observe this list of options:

  • -3=group. This means that if someone goes in this direction, they will attempt to move again from the next area, which allows for skipping of areas or directing to a certain spot, for example, getting to the middle of a city area without crossing in front of every building.
  • -2=Destroyable wall. This wall is impassable unless the player attacks it.
  • -1=impassable wall. Use for normal bariers.
  • 0=opening; the direction can be traveled.
  • 1: open door.
  • 2: closed door.
  • 3: Locked door.
  • 4: Upward ramp. Traveling in this direction will take the player higher as well as the standard direction. (this works going upward as well. It is advised against putting them below.)
  • 5: Downward ramp. Going this direction sends the player down as well as the specified direction.
  • 6: Climbable surface or ladder. Typically used for above or below, though I'm sure there's a lateral application somewhere.
  • Anything above 6 is considered to be a breakable ladder; that is, there is a chance it will break when the player travels on/through it proportional to the value. I.E, a passage of 7 is more likely to collapse than a passage of 9. Typically these are used for what the player is standing/climbing on such that the ground can collapse and cause the player to fall, but they can be used for other directions as well and are considered to be collapsing passages; if someone passes through such a passage, there is a chance that it will collapse. This is different from a collapsing ground in that the randomness only occurs when the player passes through the exit rather than while the player is standing over it.
  • "gloc " : This string value allows you to assign a gloc that is moved to when taking the exit. Since you won't necessarily know the name of this gloc, this tag can be completed to look like this: "gloc <unknown>". If you do know the gloc, put its name after the word gloc (space included). To move to Nohin via this method, for example, the tag would be "gloc Nohin". The quotes are very important, as the program only writes numbers, but this is a string value.

  • Object IDs

One of the first things of interest in making a map for an RPG is the inclusion of interactive objects and beings, as well as random items and such. To keep track of these, we use a string. For example, instead of making a huge list of items, we turn it into a single sequence of letters, such as "4ax%:". That looks an aweful lot like gibberish, so we'll provide this list of items and their IDs.

To include an animate object or person, type the char for that object or person (capitalization is important!) when the mapmaker asks you "Who is here?" The same goes for items. "What's here?" should be answered with the IDs of all of the items in the area. Note also that certain IDs use the backslash (\) before the symbol (such as \', \", and \\). These are important, because your contributions will be displayed as typed rather than with a default \ formatting! So if there's a \ in the ID, use it. Otherwise... don't.

Another important note: there are certain characters and items that, by continuity can't be thrown around into a bunchof different areas. These will be marked with a bullet (•) and appear lighter than the other entries.

‡ These are mutants that are probably not going to be found on Earth. Read Planet Seva for more.

The world leaders are identified by nation. Naturally that's not near a comprehensive list. Note also that prominent figures during the entire time period (Saddam's capture might be within the timeframe of the RPG) have their names rather than title for reasons of real-world parallels.

No copyright of Disney's is intended to be infringed upon by the Disney characters that appear here. The reasoning is that Disney themeparks exist in the Jeqo universe, so it logically follows that said characters would appear. Other than in name, no connection with Disney or use of trademarks is involved, and if the Disney corporation so wishes these names can be removed from the list entirely (or modified to a parody form or something). I'd call it promotion rather than copyright violation, but I'm not the one with an army of lawyers...

    Interaction with animates

As of 5:34 AM 11/12/2006, the mapmaker doesn't include the necessary code for the talk/attack engine to work, though it will likely be updated with this engine in the near future. These elements can still be added by doing the following:

update: as of 8:06 AM 11/12/2006, the talk/attack engine is installed in the mapmaker and prompts you for every animate that is present.

  • Values for responses:
  • Start with anything other than the following codes to just have a description or comment result.
  • C_A## : The creature/object does damage of ## to the player's hp.
  • fig : start a fight with said creature. Note that only certain people and creatures can fight. If you attempt to fight a creature without fighting abilities, a default action will occur.
  • kil : The creature/object kills the player instantly! Should probably be rare.
  • giv# : give item # to player, where # is the ID of the item the player is to receive. If this entry is longer than four characters, the remaining text will be displayed as a message in addition to the gift.
  • There are others that are more specific and thus unlikely to be used in non-specific situations.

  • Areas to create

So you want to make a map, but don't know where to begin. Well, there's a whole universe out there to explore, so here are some guidelines!

  • • First off, name the gloc something very specific that hasn't been used before. Which goes to the next point,
  • • Check anything that has been posted on the map thread (linked near the top of this document). You don't need to read everything, just check the posts for the gloc. Similarly, it's helpful to declare a gloc at the top of a post to minimize the work of someone looking for this information.
  • • Don't overdue some realness. For Example, we've said that Disney World exists in the Jeqo universe, but we don't need an accurate map of Disney World; on the one hand Disney has websites for that, on the other, it is too much focus on a universe that is not necessarily concurrent with the RPG universe. We need themeparks and shopping areas and various neighborhoods and wilderness, but we don't need companies or brand names or streetaddresses or adult content or anything of the sort.
  • • We're covering a lot of places in the universe, but the focus will be mainly on Earth and planets with a lot of exposure in Jeqo series. Remember that each country is pretty big, and that there are areas that would take a lot of time to create completely (the United States alone is a huge project. It's unlikely that you could cover more than a whole state in one map, unless it's a very invariant state. Like... Kansas...). Pick something that is lacking as it is. If that area appears in some capacity in a Jeqo release, either work around that part, or reference that place in the process.
  • • As for interplanetary stuff, remember how little we know about the universe, even with Jeqo additions. You can work on places in our solar system, but don't throw in things that we don't know of, such as Martians (I.E, there are places where we have pictures of Martians not currently living. If you think there are people on Mars and want to make maps for Mars, use the places we know Martians don't inhabit). Not to say that there isn't room for creativity; just let creativity be in accordance with knowledge! We have other galaxies where there is plenty of room for that.
  • • Space is big. And can be redundant. Sometimes being redundant is useful in such big areas. Other times it isn't. We could probably write a whole list of guidelines just for space maps...
  • • have fun, and don't prevent others from doing so!
